A Tribute to Dr. Peter H. Raven
We honor the life and legacy of Dr. Peter H. Raven, UCLA alumnus (Ph.D. ’60), world-renowned botanist, conservationist, and one of the most influential voices for biodiversity in the modern era. Growing up in California, Dr. Raven developed a passion for nature at an early age, collecting plants and insects, exploring wild places, and studying specimens through the California Academy of Sciences. That childhood curiosity led to a lifetime of scientific discovery and environmental stewardship.
At UCLA, Dr. Raven helped document the flora of the Santa Monica Mountains, resulting in the publication of Flora of the Santa Monica Mountains (1966), the first definitive guide to the region’s plant life. He went on to author over 900 scientific papers and textbooks, advance our understanding of plant evolution and biodiversity, and transform the Missouri Botanical Garden and Herbarium into a global leader in research, education, and conservation. His many honors included the U.S. National Medal of Science and recognition as a “Hero for the Planet.”
Dr. Raven passed away on April 25, 2026, just shy of his 90th birthday. His extraordinary contributions to science, conservation, and environmental education continue to inspire generations of researchers, naturalists, and all who value the natural world.
