Santa Monica Mountains
The Santa Monica Mountains are home to some of the most unique habitats in the United States. And they’re right in Los Angelenos’ backyard! So what makes these mountains so special? Over 1,000 types of plants and animals find refuge in the landscape’s diverse topography. From salt marshes to chaparral to oak woodlands, wildlife thrive.
Plants like toyon, Heteromeles arbutifolia, flourish in the Santa Monica Mountains. Peoples native to this area harvest the bright red berries and consume them in many ways. This striking shrub is so prominent in the region that it has become LA’s official native plant! Check out toyon through the seasons on the right.
