Día de los Muertos event spotlights environmental grief through ofrendas, art show

Reid Sperison of The Daily Bruin wrote an article highlighting a free public event called “Día de los Muertos: Mourning and Remembering Through Ecological Change” which was hosted at the Garden. The event featured ofrendas decorated in tribute to environmental activists like Jane Goodall and art created by UCLA students which highlighted the mourning of biodiversity losses at the heart of the event. Katherine Hernandez, a doctoral student at the UCLA Institute of the Environment & Sustainability and event organizer, said the event sprang from “the holiday’s place in her heritage and the overlap she saw between grief and perceptions of the environment.”
