Mediterranean Ecosystem

The term Mediterranean refers to the Mediterranean Basin of Europe, as well as a climate regime which is characterized by cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. There are five regions in the world which experience a Mediterranean climate. In addition to the  Mediterranean Basin, California, central Chile, the Cape Region of South Africa and southwestern Australia all experience this climate regime. These regions also have similarities in their vegetation as well climate. The vegetation of these areas are dominated by evergreen shrublands, with plants leathery leaves.

Our Mediterranean Garden is comprised of plants from all five Mediterranean-climate regions. We have future plans to renovate this area, reorganizing towards a geographical organization that can highlight convergent evolution in plant growth forms. We will initially focus primarily on plants of the Mediterranean Basin and Chile as these regions are not represented by other major sections in the Garden. Stay tuned for exciting developments in this area.
