SUMMARY:Birding at MEMBG 3/16/17 @ 8AM
DESCRIPTION:***UPDATE*** Due to construction in the patio we will meet at the Nest. The Patio entrance to the garden will be close for construction\, please use the Tiverton\, or South Gate entrances. \n  \nDuring the winter months\, the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden (MEMBG) is full of birds. A typical walk around the garden can reveal upwards of twenty species\, many of which have migrated from thousands of miles to the north to spend the winter in the garden. By May\, most of these species will have left again for their northern breeding grounds. Want to see them while they’re still here? Join the Bruin Naturalists Club and Botanical Garden staff for a guided bird walk on Thursday\, March 16th from 8am to 9:30am. We will see warblers\, sparrows\, hummingbirds\, finches\, and much more! If we’re lucky\, we may even see some passage migrants that have arrived on their spring migration from the south\, either to rest in the garden on their way north\, or to breed here for the summer.\nDue to space constraints\, we are limited to 15 participants- so if you’re interested\, RSVP to rhedley [at ] ucla.edu as soon as possible.\nWhen: 8 – 9:30am\, Thursday\, March 16th. Coffee and snacks will be served at 8am at The Patio\nWhere: The Patio – in the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden\nWhat to bring: Binoculars if you have them\, though spare sets will also be available.

SUMMARY:Insect Light Trapping Event 3/4/17 @ 7PM
DESCRIPTION:Everyone knows the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden (MEMBG) stream is the best place on campus to see turtles\, koi\, and cool riparian plants. But what else is in there? To find out please join special guest Dr. Carlos de la Rosa and the Bruin Naturalists Club as part of a survey team of MEMBG stream aquatic insects from 7-10pm on Saturday\, March 4th.\nHow you ask\, and why at night? Many insects can only be positively identified by their adult characteristics. Some aquatic insects\, however\, live the majority of their lives underwater in a juvenile state\, emerging as adults only briefly to breed\, lay eggs\, and die. Emerging adults can be hard to find\, but none can resist the allure of a good ultra violet light. If we’re lucky\, we’ll see moths\, beetles\, midges\, and mayflies. If not\, we’ll see turtles\, koi\, and cool riparian plants- at night!\nDue to space constraints\, we are limited to 15 participants- so if you’re interested\, RSVP to charlie.delarosa [at] gmail.com as soon as possible.\nWhen: 7 – 10pm\, Saturday\, March 4th\nWhere: Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden. Meet at 7pm in the Patio.\nWho: Dr. Carlos L. de la Rosa is an aquatic entomologist and director of the La Selva Biological Field Station in Puerto Viejo\, Costa Rica.
