SUMMARY:Argentine Ants: Super colonies in the Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Botanical Garden holds more than just plants – it is home to many other life forms\, and in particular\, the diverse array of insects that call the Garden their home. Join Julie Miller for a talk to learn about one such insect\, the Argentine Ant\, that arrived in California a little over 100 years ago\, and established itself along the garden trails. These unsuspecting creatures have a strange social system\, not found in their native Argentina\, that causes them to form Super-colonies – a single\, interconnected colony that spans the length of the state of California! We’ll hear about what has led these tiny black ants to achieve such epic proportions\, and what existing theories can tell us about their future. Expanding through the state as a super-colony has been bad news for native ants\, and we’ll hear about their impact on California flora and fauna and what you can do to help.\nThis event is free\, please RSVP.\nJulie Miller is an NSF post-doctoral fellow in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA. She does her research on the social systems of ants to understand how they cooperate and communicate in groups. She is currently using the Argentine ant in her studies on the evolution of group size.

SUMMARY:Botanical Origins: Natural Dyes with Next of Kin Studio
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation and pop-up shop featuring the creative natural dye projects of Allison Alford. Allison is a Los Angeles based artist and teacher who explores connections between art and the natural world. Her practice involves a passion for plants and the relationship she can form with them through her work. Natural dyeing is an ancient art form that has allowed Allison to relate with plants in a way that is intimate\, generative and experimental. She is also the co-founder of Next of Kin Studio\, a business that celebrates nature through a creative exploration of materials\, process and relationships.\nAllison will share about her work with natural dyes and plants and touch briefly on the history of this age old art form. There will be a small pop-up shop of a selection of her Next of Kin Studio naturally dyed pieces\, some made especially for this event.\nAllison received her Masters of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University. She co-founded Next of Kin Studio\, teaches Natural Dyeing at Armory Center for the Arts and has selected experiences and exhibitions including\, Landscape\, Monte Vista Projects\, Fig Tree and Good Medicine\, Summercamp ProjectProject\, Foraging & Natural Dye Workshop\, Malibu Orchards\, Hive Mind & Words I Know\, Coachella Valley Arts Center\, Memories I Don’t Have\, hidden at the Downtown Los Angeles Public Library.\nThis event is free\, but space is limited–please RSVP. The UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden is free and open to the public 9am-5pm on weekends–come explore before or after this event!

SUMMARY:Native Bees in the Wild & in Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by Dylan Burge exploring the ecology and health of native bees. Native bees are diverse and ecologically important in California. In natural ecosystems\, native bees are the primary pollinators of most plants. However\, native bees are in decline around the world\, with introduced diseases and pesticides the likely cause of the decline. Although humans as a whole are ultimately responsible for bee decline\, individuals can promote bee diversity by smart native plant gardening techniques that promote pollinator diversity.\n\nDylan Burge is a botanical and entomological consultant based in California. He does research on native plants and insects. In his spare time\, Dylan enjoys hiking\, photography\, free-diving\, and mountaineering. He is a Post Doc in Victoria Sork’s lab at UCLA.

SUMMARY:Ethnomusicology in the Garden: Hindustani Classical Music
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the golden hour in the garden for a concert of Hindustani (Northern Indian) classical music featuring sitar and tabla. This music takes form through a concept called raag\, which contains mood\, composition and improvisation\, and flows through multiple movements which build up to climactic closing sections. The selected raags are Charukeshi and Yaman\, which are both traditionally played or listened to in the evening. These will be performed outside in the waning hours of the day\, with the hope of connecting the sonic performance with the moods of the garden at a day’s end. \nMusic is performed by UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Department of Ethnomusicology students Justin Inbar on sitar and Ram Kaundinya on tabla. \nThis event is free\, but seating is limited. Please RSVP here. \nThere is no charge for many of our programs\, but donations of any amount are greatly appreciated! Please visit our website to support the Docent and Education Fund. Thank you for considering a tax-deductible donation to the Botanical Garden.

SUMMARY:Blacklisted: A Planted Allegory (Recollections)
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be labeled invasive? To be considered the wrong kind\, unwanted. Artist Jenny Yurshansky will share her work Blacklisted: A Planted Allegory (Recollections)\, an artist book that investigates the distinctions between native versus invasive species as determined by The California Invasive Species Advisory Counsel (CISAC). Out of the 600 blacklisted alien-invasive plants\, she found 133 which are now indexed in this collection; a group that is simultaneously highly local and totally foreign.\n\nSemantically the use of such terms as invasive and native are loaded. The direct correlation between human population shifts that occur at politically determined borders\, rather than those determined by biomes\, and the introduction vectors of these species is an area that warrants illumination. Come join the conversation and see Jenny’s artist book in the style of a botanical herbarium. Copies will be available for purchase\, $60. Cash\, check\, or Venmo accepted.\nThis event is free\, but space is limited–Please RSVP\n\nJenny Yurshansky is an American artist who was born in Rome. She received her MFA in Visual Art from UC Irvine.  In 2017 her artist edition book\, “Blacklisted: A Planted Allegory (Recollections)” was published by Pitzer College Art Galleries. She is the recipient of numerous artist and curatorial grants and has worked extensively internationally. SUMMARY:Making Honey in Los Angeles County: From Flower to Jar
DESCRIPTION:How do bees create honey here in Los Angeles County? Come see inside of a hive and explore bee ecology with beekeeper Eli Lichter-Marck of Eli’s Bees. He’ll take us on an adventure following honey as it transforms from flower to jar. He’ll cover raising healthy bees\, apiculture in our local ecology\, and conservation and education.\n\nThe talk will be followed by a presentation of local honey varieties from main West LA nectar flows\, with the opportunity to try different honeys and compare tasting notes!\n\nThis event is free\, but space is limited. Please RSVP to reserve your spot.\n\nEli runs a small commercial beekeeping operation in West Los Angeles County. His 200 colonies live throughout the diverse ecological zones of the Santa Monica Mountains. Eli’s background is in ecological design and architecture. Eli was drawn to beekeeping because of the unique opportunity it affords the beekeeper to witness and participate first-hand in the complex of weather dynamics\, plant genetics\, and insect biology that make up the world of the bees.

SUMMARY:Kodachromes of the Caribbean; The Field Photographs of Alain H. Liogier
DESCRIPTION:Join Brandy Watts as she discusses and signs her book “The Field Photographs of Alain H. Liogier: Plants of Hispaniola\, Dominican Republic\, 1968-1969” \n“This volume represents an important selection of 116 photographs from a specific window of time and place as viewed through the camera lens of one of the greatest botanists of all time. Ms. Watts has curated an impressive collection of images that not only serve to document Dr. Liogier’s research but bring to light the unique way this particular scientist saw the world of plants in their environment. As Ms. Watts states\, “Each photograph is an instant within diverging and overlapping trajectories: plant science research\, photographic technology\, plant species adaptation\, habitat transformation\, land conservation\, climate change\, a particular botanist’s research\, and an individual’s lifetime.” If you are interested in where science and fine art merge\, then this book is for you.” \nClick here for more information on the book. \nThis is a free event\, if you are planning to attend we kindly ask you to RSVP at: https://tinyurl.com/y7lmcdr9

SUMMARY:May 18th Panel Discussion: Biodiversity in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Biodiversity is undergoing tremendous change at the hands of humanity. As some habitats disappear and many wild organisms face extinction\, other species flourish in novel ecosystems. Join us for an expert panel discussion which will examine the current state of biodiversity and the narratives which shape related public opinion and policy as we ask the question: how can we successfully coexist with nature on an increasingly technological planet? \nSpace is limited so please RSVP as soon as possible at https://tinyurl.com/nxhk586 \n  \nMeet at 4PM at the Nest \nLight reception to follow the discussion. \nClick here for directions and parking instructions. \nPanelists: \nJohn Clark serves a dual role as President and Executive Director of the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) and as director of Plant Conservation at San Diego Zoo Global. John and CPC Chairman of the Board Dr. Peter Raven successfully led an initiative to relocate the CPC’s National Headquarters from St. Louis to the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. Here\, John continues to lead the CPC’s national efforts to save endangered plants through scientific research\, applied conservation\, and technology innovation. While John’s training and background is in basic research\, his particular passion is for developing strong collaborations – bringing together world experts in a variety of disciplines – to achieve measurable conservation outcomes. \nDan Gluesenkamp is Executive Director of the California Native Plant Society where he works to celebrate and save California’s native plants and places. Dan earned his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley and worked as Executive Director of Calflora\, and as Director of Habitat Protection and Restoration for Audubon Canyon Ranch’s thirty preserves. He is a co-founder of Cal-IPC and of the Bay Area Early Detection Network (BAEDN)\, and in 2009 discovered a presumed-extinct manzanita growing near the Golden Gate Bridge. \nUrsula K. Heise is the Marcia H. Howard Chair in Literary Studies at the Department of English and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA. She is a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow and former President of ASLE (Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment). Her research and teaching focus on environmental narrative and culture in the Americas\, Western Europe and Japan; literature and science; science fiction; and narrative theory. She is editor of the series Natures\, Cultures\, and the Environment with Palgrave\, co-editor of the Routledge Companion to the Environmental Humanities\, and Managing Editor of Futures of Comparative Literature. Her books include Sense of Place and Sense of Planet: The Environmental Imagination of the Global (Oxford University Press\, 2008)\, Nach der Natur: Das Artensterben und die moderne Kultur (Suhrkamp\, 2010) and Imagining Extinction: The Cultural Meanings of Endangered Species (University of Chicago Press\, 2016). She is also a co-founder of UCLA’s Lab for Environmental Narrative Strategies (LENS). \nPhil Rundel is Distinguished Professor of Biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA\, and Director of the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden. He received his undergraduate degree at Pomona College in Claremont\, followed by Master’s and Ph.D. degrees at Duke University. He joined UCLA in 1983 after serving as Professor of Biology at UC Irvine. His research has centered on the ecology\, biodiversity\, and conservation of plants and plant communities in the five mediterranean-climate regions of the world. This focus has led to an increasing involvement in collaborative work with government agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs) to promote public awareness of the biodiversity significance and conservation of these regions. He has also been involved with ecological research and conservation biology in tropical forest areas\, with a special emphasis on research in Costa Rica\, Hawai’i\, Thailand\, and Cambodia. He has served as a consultant to WWF on conservation issues. \n

DESCRIPTION:***UPDATE*** Due to construction in the patio we will meet at the Nest. The Patio entrance to the garden will be close for construction\, please use the Tiverton\, or South Gate entrances. \n  \nDuring the winter months\, the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden (MEMBG) is full of birds. A typical walk around the garden can reveal upwards of twenty species\, many of which have migrated from thousands of miles to the north to spend the winter in the garden. By May\, most of these species will have left again for their northern breeding grounds. Want to see them while they’re still here? Join the Bruin Naturalists Club and Botanical Garden staff for a guided bird walk on Thursday\, March 16th from 8am to 9:30am. We will see warblers\, sparrows\, hummingbirds\, finches\, and much more! If we’re lucky\, we may even see some passage migrants that have arrived on their spring migration from the south\, either to rest in the garden on their way north\, or to breed here for the summer.\nDue to space constraints\, we are limited to 15 participants- so if you’re interested\, RSVP to rhedley [at ] ucla.edu as soon as possible.\nWhen: 8 – 9:30am\, Thursday\, March 16th. SUMMARY:Insect Light Trapping Event 3/4/17 @ 7PM
DESCRIPTION:Everyone knows the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden (MEMBG) stream is the best place on campus to see turtles\, koi\, and cool riparian plants. But what else is in there? To find out please join special guest Dr. Carlos de la Rosa and the Bruin Naturalists Club as part of a survey team of MEMBG stream aquatic insects from 7-10pm on Saturday\, March 4th.\nHow you ask\, and why at night? Many insects can only be positively identified by their adult characteristics. Some aquatic insects\, however\, live the majority of their lives underwater in a juvenile state\, emerging as adults only briefly to breed\, lay eggs\, and die. Emerging adults can be hard to find\, but none can resist the allure of a good ultra violet light. If we’re lucky\, we’ll see moths\, beetles\, midges\, and mayflies. If not\, we’ll see turtles\, koi\, and cool riparian plants- at night!\nDue to space constraints\, we are limited to 15 participants- so if you’re interested\, RSVP to charlie.delarosa [at] gmail.com as soon as possible.\nWhen: 7 – 10pm\, Saturday\, March 4th\nWhere: Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden. Meet at 7pm in the Patio.\nWho: Dr. Carlos L. de la Rosa is an aquatic entomologist and director of the La Selva Biological Field Station in Puerto Viejo\, Costa Rica.
