Tufts of this perennial beach grass (Family Poaceae) can be seen in strand vegetation of northern California. Spacing of these tufts is an indication that they arise on below-ground, horizontal rhizomes. Their roots occur in relatively cool and often moist sand, below the dry surface sand of the shifting dune.
