On temperate beaches of eastern and western North America, sand dunes of the strand are often stabilized by rhizomatous perennial grasses, especially European beachgrass, Ammophila arenaria (Family Poaceae) from northern Europe. Of course, the genus name means "sand lover," because this species is highly adapted to colonize shifting sand.
