At a landward margin of the mangrove swamp near La Paz, Baja California, Mexico, the black mangrove, Avicennia germinans (family Verbenaceae/Avicenniaceae), a tree species, borders a higher region of the mud flat where the prostrate, leaf-succulent halophyte Batis maritima (family Bataceae) tolerates the hypersaline substrate.
