Emerging shoots of the red-colored snow plant, Sarcodes sanguinea, a saprophytic flowering plant The emerging red-colored shoots of snow plant, Sarcodes sanguinea (Family Ericaceae) are pigmented with anthocyanins. This is a saprophytic flowering plant that leaves in coniferous forests of western North America. The brightly pigmented shoot totally lacks chlorophyll, and perhaps the dark color, rather than white, enables the plant to absorb more solar radiation as it grows through snow during the cool spring months.
