Pilostyles thurberi, an endoparasite on Psorothamnus emoryi in the California desert A rarely seen stem parasite is Pilostyles thurberi (Family Rafflesiaceae), which can occur on the stem of the legume shrub Psorothamnus emoryi. This endoparasite has flower buds that burst through the bark of the host plant. These photographs were taken in Imperial County, California.
