The mistletoe Phoradendron villosum on the oak Quercus chrysolepis The fleshy white berries of Phoradendron villosum, oak mistletoe, can be seen adorning many species of oaks (Quercus) in California. This specimen is growing in the canopy of Quercus chrysolepis, canyon live oak, on the eastern slope of mountains in Southern California. The fruits are consumed by birds and thereby spread to other branches and trees, when birds defecate the seeds. Berries of certain mistletoe species contain chemicals that are toxic to humans.
