Unless you look closely you may not see the minute enations along the ridges of the stem in whisk fern, Psilotum nudum. This species evolved from a group that primitively did not possess leaves, and therefore the green stem is the sole photosynthetic organ. Stomates are located along the valleys, not the ridges, of the stem.
