Vegetative shoot of Psilotum, whisk fern Unless you look closely you may not see the minute enations along the ridges of the stem in whisk fern, Psilotum nudum. This species evolved from a group that primitively did not possess leaves, and therefore the green stem is the sole photosynthetic organ. Stomates are located along the valleys, not the ridges, of the stem.
