The majority of epiphytic orchid species (Family Orchidaceae) form conspicuous, enlarged stem segments, termed pseudobulbs, from which the leaf blade arises. These are succulent and therefore store a substantial amount of water to aid the plant in resisting temporary water shortages, as during the dry season or when growing on canopy branches that may be exposed to drying sun and wind over the course of the day.
