This scandent plant, Combretum bracteosum (Family Combretaceae), forms grapple-like spines by shedding the leaf blade and hardening the petiole into a spine. These petiolar spines often occur in groups of fours or fives, but are actually pseudowhorls, because leaf arrangement is alternate.
