Backward-pointing stem emergences are common on vines and scramblers. Vertebrates are likely to travel around these thickets, because progress through them is slow and hazardous. Having stem emergences helps the plant to form a tangle with itself and other plants, providing more support than free-standing shoots. This is a neotropical climber, Smilax mollis (Family Smilacaceae).
