This is an example of a tropical vine having a long searcher shoot. The stem has very long stem internodes before the leaves begin to enlarge, and this enables the plant to grow rapidly into sunlight while reaching for potential new support. If the shoot fails to find support, often the shoot tip die--a form of self pruning.
