Several species of the genus Monstera (family Araceae) are secondary hemiepiphytes, first rooting in soil at the base of a tree, clamoring upwards by clinging to the tree bark via adventitious roots. The adventitious roots are "nodal roots," formed at the nodes and not in the intervening internodes.
