Dioscorea bulbifera with armature and tendrils One of the most unusual tropical vines is Dioscorea bulbifera (Family Dioscoreaceae), which produces it shoots from a massive tuber. Stems are markedly winged, and along the ridges are stem emergences, which can grab neighboring vegetation for support. This species also produces tendrils. As in other vines, growth of the leaves is delayed on searcher shoots until the stem are firmly attached to a support.
