A tendril is of evergreen grape, Rhoicissus capensis (Family Vitaceae), has coiled around one of its own stems. This is usually accomplished by the cells on the side away from the support growing faster than cells on the side touching the support. Once coiled around the support, the tendril becomes tougher and, over time, may become woody.
