The stolons of Gunnera magellanica (Family Haloragaceae) from central and southern Chile enable this herbaceous perennial to form large mats of vegetation on open ground. Within the stem are colonies of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (Nostoc), which provide the plant with nitrogen in an otherwise nutrient-poor environment.
