Water-hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Family Pontederiaceae), clones very rapidly in tropical lakes and rivers via the white stolon, also called a rhizome. In this way, the mother plant produces ramets, each of which can bread away and start its own colony. There are abundant young roots with elaborate root hairs that enable the plant to take up water.
