Root buttresses of this rain forest tree greatly widen the base of the plant, providing some protection for the tree of breaking at the trunk base. Forest trees with buttresses, when they fall, either become totally uprooted or break above the buttressed base. Tree fall is most often attributed to strong winds, especially violent tropical storms, which reek havoc when they pass through tropical forest regions.
