The strangler figs of the genus Ficus produce a network of branching and coalescing roots, which encircle the host tree. The strangler produces a dense canopy of leaves, shading the host plant and contributing to the rapid grow of the fig at the expense of the host tree. The tree trunk also bears climbing aroids (Family Araceae).
