Leaves of Smilax (Family Smilacaceae), a genus of monocotyledonous vines, in some species can develop as tendrils. This climber, which also has sharp stem emergences, is S. mollis, growing as a pioneer species in a Costa Rican rain forest on the edge of a light gap.
