Few stipules are as attractive as the deep rose ones on Talauma hodgsonii (Family Magnoliaceae), which is native to the foothills of the Himalayas. In April, this tree with very large obovate, evergreen leaves, begins its spring by producing red new growth of stipules and leaf blades. When the stipule abscises, it dries black and leaves an annular stipular scar, which can be easily seen in this illustration. A month later this species produces solitary, cream-colored flowers more than four inches wide.
