Leafy stipules of ramie, Boehmeria nivea A leaf of ramie, Boehmeria nivea (Family Urticaceae), bears a pair of narrow, leaf-like stipules attached to the base of the petiole. The stem, from which the ramie commercial fiber is isolated, is very hairy, and the plant hairs on the lower surface of the leaf blade produce the whiteness (nivea refers to snow).
