Crown-of-thorns, Euphorbia milii (Family Euphorbiaceae), forms sharp stipular spines. In this species, the conspicuous elliptical leaves are the photosynthetic organs, whereas in many euphorbs of dry habitats, the succulent stem is green and has taken over that function.
