Stipules on mountain-mahogany, Cercocarpus Hidden in the shade of this young shoot of island mountain-mahogany, Cercocarpus betuloides var. blancheae (Family Rosaceae) are its red stipules, which are caduous, i.e., abscising soon after the leaf has fully expanded. This species is narrowly endemic in Southern California chaparral, mostly on the Channel Islands.
