Species of subgenus Cerastes of Ceanothus (Family Rhamnaceae) in California chaparral have pairs of stipules with thick bases that are persistent and become corky with age. The leaves of most species are opposite, thick, and densely hairy on the lower surface, where the stomates are hidden in pits, called stomatal crypts.
