Sharp and prominent bark prickles on a woody stem of a kapok, Ceiba aesculifolia Very sharp and sturdy persistent bark prickles occur on this species of kapok, Ceiba aesculifolia (Family Bombacaceae) from Mexico. Bark prickles are certainly a defense against large herbivores, although nobody has determined which groups of herbivores were around this plant lineage to result in this adaptation.
