Typical seeds of cotton contain conspicuous black glands producing gossypol. Gossypol interferes with digestion in livestock, so where cotton seed is to be used for livestock feed, the cotton is genetically bred to be glandless. Glandless cotton is, unfortunately, more susceptible to predation by its worst pests.
