Culms of an arborescent bamboo arise from the horizontal rhizome system. In the center, a young shoot still possesses the large leaves of the primary shoot. Each leaf is attached at a node by an encircling leaf base. When the leaf abscises, a circular leaf scare is formed. An axillary bud occurs just above each node and here is visible at a few nodes.
