Robust horizontal rhizomes of Arundo donax produce shoots that grow upward to become the leafy green shoots. Adventitious roots arise from the lower side of the rhizomes. Pieces of rhizome are severed and replanted in trenches to yield new clones, and broken rhizomes are the way Arundo invades new sites along rivers.
