After poles of Arundo donax are completely dry, the pole is trimmed and placed in full sun exposure for final drying and bleaching by the sun. After this, the lower portion (often five internodes) are cut from the pole into 4-inch lengths, to be split and sanded later into reeds for musical instruments.
