Updates on Old Bones

Not more than a week after we printed our tree tour, a featured specimen of Eucalyptus robusta unexpectedly dropped a huge limb, including nearly half of its canopy, and for safety reasons, the rest had to be removed.Tree surgeons were hired to expertly take down the massive trunk of the swamp mahogany. Its gorgeous heartwood was deep red and aromatic, so we were left with several nicely scented logs and piles of reddish sawdust.

Another specimen that died this year was the Japanese maple that grew along the service road near our gigantic Torrey pine. After losing the maple, the MEMBG staff invested hundreds of hours over the summer to redesign and renovate the major path there to take advantage of the extra space.
