An Invitation

As 2001 begins, we extend an invitation to you and your school or organization to tour the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden at UCLA.

The UCLA botanical garden, which includes some 5,000 species of plants from regions all over the world, is a living museum that maintains one of America's largest collections of tropical and subtropical plants. Each season brings a unique flowering of plants as well as new additions to the garden family of trees and fish, and even a new batch of docents who are eager to share their hard-earned knowledge.

Tours of the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden last approximately one hour, and can be designed for specific age groups, interests, restrictions, and the scientific knowledge for the visitors. Tour guides introduce basic botanical concepts, along with interesting historical facts and unusual characteristics of rare specimens. Tours are offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.and must be booked two weeks in advance. Patio tables may be reserved for lunch.

As an added feature of our tours for grades 2-12, we offer a set of curriculum guides for use in preparing students before coming to the garden, and another set as a follow-up after the tour. We believe that guides will enrich the actual tour experience and allow for its continuation in the classroom.

In addition to our reservation-only tours for school and community groups, we now offer drop-in tours the first Sunday of the month at 1 and 2 p.m. Meet in The Nest, the outdoor classroom at the northern end of the garden.
