Elizabeth Schwartz joined MEMBG in October 1995 as a volunteer gardener and won a place in our hearts as a valued and reliable helper. Her friendly personality and sense of purpose and direction made her wonderful to work with, and she soon assumed shared responsibility, with Joan Muench, for managing our volunteer gardeners. Elizabeth also was a big help in maintaining computer records for the garden, and in preparing for Earth Day 1998 celebrations at MEMBG. She continued volunteering even after she was hired as a part-time staff member, developing the propagation and container plant record systems that we use today. In November, Elizabeth transferred her flag to the Theodore Payne Foundation, a nonprofit organization in San Fernando for promoting native plants, where she became the new executive director. We wish her well in her new position.
