To assure all visitors access to important special collections throughout MEMBG, in August 1996 work began on construction of paths graded to five percent, that connect The Nest with access on South Tiverton. In November 1996, approximately fifty UCLA fraternity members generously contributed "Bruin brawn" to the project by volunteering a Saturday in the garden, earning the dubious reward of a lunch prepared by Director Gibson. Garden staff hauled untold tons of river boulders from Duarte to form borders on the new paths. Once the paths were completed, Capital Programs supported a project that established a new entrance on South Tiverton, opposite the hospital emergency room. MEMBG staff built yet another new entrance opposite The Patio. In early fall, MEMBG received a grant of $50,000 from Capital Programs to help fund path construction.
